The Indigenous Peoples Alliance (IPA) is a cultural community, chartered by the Carleton Student Association, for students who identify with an Indigenous group, anywhere around the world, to share with each other what it means to be Indigenous through different cultural objects and experiences.

In 2021, the IPA put forward the following priorities for the College’s work to live into our land acknowledgement:

  • Create a staff position to support Indigenous-related efforts on campus.
  • Create a dedicated ceremonial space for Native students on campus.
  • Create a cultural house for Native students.
  • Increase pathways for Indigenous students to attend Carleton, including expanded scholarships for Indigenous students and full cost-of-attendance for Dakota students.
  • Increase Indigenous Studies courses and the number of Indigenous faculty members.

Progress to date on these priorities is outlined in President Alison Byerly’s letter to the campus on Indigenous Peoples’ Day 2022.
