Week 4: Introduction to Zen Buddhism
An introduction to the history and varieties of Zen Buddhism, followed by Soto Zen meditation practice, consisting of two periods of "just sitting" (shikantaza) interspersed with walking meditation (kinhin). The session will be framed by recitation of the Heart Sutra at the beginning and of the Four Great Vows at the end.

Week 6: NOT MEETING

Week 8: Zen Ritual, Aesthetics, and Meditation
Further discussion of Zen Buddhism, with a focus on Zen ritual and aesthetics, followed by Soto Zen meditation practice, consisting of two periods of "just sitting" (shikantaza) interspersed with walking meditation (kinhin). The session will be framed by recitation of the Heart Sutra at the beginning and of the Four Great Vows at the end.
